about.
We had a problem.
Our product's weekly user engagement was declining and our churn rate was increasing.
When we looked into why, we realized it was because our product lacked the features necessary to deliver on the value we were promising, namely, to help small business owners grow their company.
The biggest opportunity for impact was around weekly meeting cadences. I designed a 1-on-1 meeting tool for business owners to use during their weekly meetings with direct reports.
Prior to this, our users had no way to run these meetings within our product and were forced to find their own solutions or use a competitor.
process.
After spending an exhaustive amount of time conducting user calls, mapping out the opportunity space, and doing competitive analysis of the marketplace, we started dreaming big about what the coolest meeting tool could look like.
I ideated with engineers to hear their ideas and give them a sense of ownership in the solution. With the influx of ideas being tossed around, I quickly started wireframing everything on a whiteboard to make sure that we were all on the same page.
Humans speak in words but think in pictures, so when in doubt, I draw!
Once we were aligned on the longterm vision of the tool that we could iterate towards, we worked backwards to thin slice it into the smallest pieces of value before getting to work.
Working concurrently through the delivery process, the engineers and I regularly paired together and pulled one another into each other’s worlds. By doing this in real time, I was aware of the technical constraints we were working in and they understood why certain design decisions were imperative to keep. We sought to understand each other’s perspectives and work together towards the best solution.
Once the tool was live, we monitored users engagement and used interview feedback to iterate upon the tool.
results.
The 1-on-1 Meeting tool quickly gained traction with users and became one of the most used tools in our product. Through constant feedback and iterations, we've seen weekly user engagement increase by 63%.
