Our product was on an old framework that made it increasingly difficult to add new value to our customers.
We decided to rebuild our entire product on a brand new platform and to kick everything off, all of our squads teamed up for 2 days in what we lovingly called a "Build-A-Thon". The goal: rebuild the Leadership Meeting tool.

Although the Leadership Team Meeting tool already existed in the old framework, we didn’t want to rebuild it exactly in the same because it was left in a beta state for a few years and needed some major improvements.
We intentionally didn’t do any prep work before the Build-A-Thon because we wanted to practice working concurrently, a process where engineers and design work on the same piece of value at the same time. This forced us to stay in constant communication and work together towards the best solution.
Once we narrowed down the list of essential features necessary to ship the Leadership Meeting tool, we quickly started making tickets and got to work!
Because we only had 2 days, speed was the name of the game. While the engineers worked on the back end architecture, I quickly drew wireframes on a whiteboard and started piecing together the user's experience. I pulled engineers and stakeholders over to the board often to show them the direction we were going and to ask for input.
I didn't have time to create mid to high fidelity designs in Figma, so once the architecture was in a good spot, I sat with the engineers to design the front end with them in real time.

This was our first time working concurrently in this way and we were amazed by not only how well it went, but also by how we surpassed our list of essential features and were able to build much more than we expected.
Users had a seamless experience from using the tool in the old framework into the new and because of the groundwork this Build-A-Thon covered, we've been able to iterate at a much faster pace. Since then, user engagement with the Leadership Meeting tool as increased by 3x!
